Normally this time of year the Toyota US Woordfees would have taken place. However, due to the pandemic, it has been postponed to September. Nevertheless the team behind the Woordfees has come up with a new innovative initiative that will prove to be just as enjoyable and enlightening.
Throughout this week, 70 artists from a variety of disciplines (theater, poetry and dance) have been mentored by 8 facilitators, amongst others Alfred Hinkel, Gcina Mhlophe and Sylvaine Strike. The result is the development of short performances in collaboration with artists from other disciplines.
The aim of Flikker & Flash is to enliven the town centre of Stellenbosch, an attempt to fill the empty spaces with light and art, or as they call it, “Artists light up empty spaces”. In addition, it is also to support artists, who are struggling financially due to the pandemic.
The project is a joint mission from a variety of organisations working together: Toyota, the University of Stellenbosch, Nasionale Afrikaanse Teater-Inisiatief (Nati), KykNet, Stellenbosch Wine Routes and Visit Stellenbosch.
Some of the artists performing pop-up shows are Antoinette Kellerman, Ira Blanckenberg, Jane Mpholo, Jerome Rex and Luna Paige. You can view the complete of artists performing list here.
Look out for performances in empty shop windows, galleries and other empty spaces.
The programme is as follows:
Friday, 9 April, 18:30 – 21:30: A poetry and music evening will be held in the Hofmeyer Hall in Church Street.
Saturday, 10 April, 16:00 – 18:00: A Stellenbosch Street Soiree in Ryneveldt Street. Various eat and drink offerings will be available. Visitors can buy coupons at R150 that can be exchanged for wine tastings from various estates, such as Blaauwklippen, Somerbosch, Lanzerac, Jordan and Neil Ellis.
Saturday, 10 April, 18:00 – 22:30: A wide variety of short performances (5-15 minutes each) will be held in the town centre. The evening will end with a festive organ recital (at 22:00) by Zorada Temmingh in the Moederkerk.
The performances are free, but Covid restrictions will apply. Remember to make your donation to Tribuo via Snapscan. Tribuo is a private fund that provides financial aid to artists who are struggling to find work due to Covid.
