Getting into the festive spirit

Getting into the festive spirit

It’s hard to imagine that we are at the beginning of December. After a difficult year, we’ve got some ways to get ourselves into the festive mood:

Christmas lights

In Stellenbosch town centre Christmas lights are joyfully decorating the street lights. Visit Die Braak especially, as well as the big tree by the NG Moederkerk. If you’re driving into town on the R304 past Kayamandi, remember to look up as you will also be welcomed with Christmas lights. Due to Covid safety precautions, there will be no Festival of Lights in Stellenbosch, nor the Adderley Street Festive Light Switch, which normally happens on the first Sunday in December.

Christmas markets

We are spoiled with Christmas markets in Stellenbosch: the ever popular Stellenbosch Kersmark at the NG Kerk Sentraal is in full swing, ending on 5 December. Do not miss out on quality art, decor and handiwork, baked goods, as well as a restaurant with excellent food. It’s a great family friendly outing.

The Slow Market at Oude Libertas is hosting their Christmas Day & Night market, on Friday 4 Dec (5pm to 10pm) and Saturday 5 Dec (9am to 2pm). Enjoy street food, artisanal delicacies and get some of your Christmas gift shopping done.

The Dorp Street Christmas Market is happening on 6 Dec from 9am – 2pm. Enjoy great food, beer, wine, clothing and apparel.

The gift of giving

Nothing beats giving during the festive season. There are many ways to give – be it financially or with your time. Here are some organisations that would appreciate your help:

Stellenbosch Unite: Donations go towards supplying weekly food packages to identified vulnerable families.

Feeding in Action: This non-profit provides meals and food supplies to about 5000 people weekly. You can donate your time, food, or financially to help distribute food to 45 strategic feeding points in the Broader Stellenbosch Municipal Area and to support 25 other community organisations.

Stellenbosch Hospice: Donate your time, food parcels, or goods for the Hospice shop (such as clothing, furniture, household items, books and kitchenware), or you can make a financial contribution.

Galileo Cinema

Nothing says Christmas like a good Christmas movie. Throughout the month of December, Galileo cinemas will be showing various Christmas-themed movies. Due to popularity, see the line-up below and remember to book your tickets.

17 December: The Holiday

19 December: Love Actually

20 December: Serendipity

23 December: Four Christmases

24 December: Jingle All the Way
