Enjoy summer with these wine farm walks

With the beautiful weather we are having, it is a great time to explore various wine farms on foot. Whether you’re in for a hike or just a leisurely stroll, there is a trail for you. Don’t forget to round off your walk with a picnic and your favourite wine.

Spier

Spier has got lovely self-guided walks, offering a combination of nature, art and their sustainability efforts. There are three walks available: the heritage walk (a free circular 90 minute walk) , the river walk (free walk of 30 minutes) and “walk the farm”. Each walk has an accompanying audio tour that you can access with your smartphone via VoiceMap

Muratie

During lockdown Dirtopia has created a new hiking trail that runs from the Trail Centre at Muratie wine farm to a look-out point with spectacular views. On this walk you’ll be able to see the sunset over Table Mountain and also have a view of the Winelands with your friends and family. The circle route is approximately 4km total, and it can take you up to 45 minutes to reach the top.

Dirtopia Trail Centre at Muratie sells permits to the marked trails of the Simonsberg trail network. There is also a shop that sells outdoor gear, trail accessories and snacks & cold drinks.

Do not miss the popular full moon hikes: Join in on 30 October for the Sunset to Full Moon Hike.

La Motte

Starting at the La Motte tasting room, the Sustainable Hike is a 5 km circular route (2 hours for hiking and 3 hours for strolling). Look out for the variety of bird-life, proteas, sustainable farmed vineyards, different flora and fauna. On Monday mornings La Motte holds a Guide Hike where a guide will share more information on the flora and fauna and the Franschhoek valley. The next Monday Morning hike is 27 October – bookings essential.

Loch Lynne Wine Estate

Enjoy a pet-friendly walk during the weekend at Loch Lynne through their vineyards and olive trees while enjoying spectacular views of the rolling Durbanvile hills. There are two trails, respectively 2.8km and 3.5km long, that are suitable for all ages. Enjoy a picnic basket afterwards – but remember to book.

Cape Point Vineyards

If you want to venture out: in Noordhoek lies Cape Point Vineyards, which has a Weekend Vineyard Trail that is free, kid-friendly and open on Saturdays and Sundays. With a spectacular view, you’ll see the ocean, fynbos, vineyards and the mountains. You can enjoy a picnic afterwards or buy food from their wine shop.
