Though we live in a wondrous wine country, sometimes it is nice to change it up and enjoy a cocktail or beer and soak up the classy bar scene. Fortunately Stellenbosch has many establishments to choose from, with a couple of very interesting places a bit further away.
Always popular, De Warenmarkt offers great appeal – both for food and drinks. Situated in an 18th century historical building, the ambiance is special – with high ceilings, wooden accents and fire places. At Simon’s Bar, you can enjoy a variety of different wines, beers and ciders as well as an extensive list of tasty gins. Central location, friendly bartenders, and good service makes this a great choice.
Located at the end of Dorp Street, Casa Cerveza labels itself a unique beer house and bistro – but there is also a variety of craft gins and cocktails. With outside seating, as well as a sleek bar counter, you can decide what type of experience you’d like to have. They also offer various specials, such as tapas, and buy one get one free cocktails. A bonus – it is child-friendly. Do not miss their competition: you can win a Trek mountain bicycle – simply buy a Stellenbrau Beer and spend more than R500 to enter
Out of town centre but still worth the drive, Classic Cats is located on Vredenheim Wine Estate. They offer a craft gin tasting and pairing, with 160 locally made craft gins to taste. Unique to Classic Cats is the Quince Gin and the Nguni Gin. Car aficionados will delight in the vintage car collection on display – that can also be hired for special occasions.
A favourite hang-out on a sunny day, Thirsty Scarecrow offers an amazing view of the Stellenbosch mountains, and a look at a working strawberry farm. Choose between the outside bar counter or the inside bar. The menu boasts a long list of local and imported beer, various cocktails and enticing tapas, such as nachos and flatbread pizzas. Open till late, it is the perfect spot for sundowners.
For those looking for a drive, Hermanus’ historic Ficks Pool has an exciting new open air restaurant. What makes Ficks unique is definitely the absolutely astonishing view, as well as their Pinchos – small, individual snack sized meals hailing from northern Spain, which offers a great way to share a meal amongst family and friends. Offering wine and various cocktails, it’s the perfect choice for a sunny day out. Unfortunately no bookings are taken, thus make sure you get there early – and check the weather: Ficks is closed when bad weather abounds. Check out their Facebook page to stay updated.
