Wine tasting the Waterford way

Wine tasting the Waterford way

With so many wine farms to choose from in Stellenbosch and its surrounds, it is often a difficult choice. Nevertheless, one of the most spectacular wine farms to visit, is Waterford Estate.

Situated on Blaauwklippen Road, Waterford is something out of a movie – upon entering, one gets the feeling of driving into an Italian villa estate. Waterford boasts luscious green lawns, lavender bunches and a beautiful courtyard with the iconic Waterford fountain in the centre.

It’s a perfect place for a sunny day out, tasting some of the best wines, such as their Grenache Noir or their very special Jem, named after the owner Jeremy “Jem” Ord.

There are different wine tasting experiences, as well as other interesting activities to choose from:

The Portfolio Tasting is a great option for tasting a selection of wines. You can also try the Library Tasting or the Wine & Chocolate pairing. Winemaker Kevin Arnold and Richard von Geusau,  famous chocolatier, created a series of milk and dark chocolates that fit beautifully with the Waterford Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Natural Sweet wine.

The Jem tasting is truly one of a kind, with a tasting of the Waterford flagship wine coming in at R125 per person – though it is definitely worth it. Waterford also offers a wonderful deal: if you buy a bottle of wine, your wine tasting is for free.

For those enjoying the outdoors, there is a Wine Drive Safari, as well as a Porcupine Trail Wine Walk. Food is also on the menu, with Waterford serving up a delicious Croque Monsieur (a French-style grilled cheese sandwich) every Saturday & Sunday between 9am-11am (with bookings).

International wine fans are not excluded: coming up on 23 October between 6pm – 8pm, is an exclusive virtual tasting – the Waterford Wine Tasting Package, in partnership with Capreo.

What makes Waterford exceptional is explained by Waterford winemaker Kevin Arnold:

“Great wines are born from the understanding of the plant, soil and climate of a specific site, together with the creative art of winemaking and blending. This is often a timeless pursuit, but when it comes together, the reward is eternal.”

Open Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm, Saturdays from 10am – 5pm and Sundays from 10am – 3pm, a visit is a must. To avoid disappointment, be sure to make a booking at or 021 880 5300.
