14 July is traditionally Bastille Day – a celebration of France’s National Day (or Day of Independence). Here in the Western Cape we’ve always been privileged to be part of the joy and fun – being close to the wonderful little town of Franschhoek.
Franschhoek did not give up on the festival this year – despite the lockdown restrictions, there is still a lot to experience and enjoy.
Since the 1st of July, Franschhoek has been offering guests a virtual journey every day – posting videos of authentic Franschhoek experiences. This virtual journey will culminate in the grand finale on 11 July (which would have been the date of the in-person festival this year). Each virtual journey has an accompanied offer that is revealed on the day – think restaurant, accommodation and retail offers (such as discounts on wine purchases).
Virtual journeys have included Boschendal, Babylonstoren, Anthonij Rupert Wines, a cooking demonstration by famous chef Reuben Riffel and more. (You can still watch these experiences on their website, Instagram and Facebook). There’s also a French phrase of the day, to help you dust off your French.
The virtual programme for 11 July is as follows:
12pm : Keeping it French and Franschhoek inspired with Topiary Wines.
12:30pm : Experience Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards’ wine cocktails.
1pm : Lunch prepared by one of Franschhoek’s well known chefs.
2pm : A music & wine pairing with Black Elephant Vintner.
3pm : A live music concert from Newton & Co.
4pm : Local band, Uncorked, will play at the Franschhoek Pass Winery where a Morena MCC will be sabraged. A guest appearance will also be made by Carol Thorns – a leading electric cellist.
No matter where you’ll be celebrating, don’t forget to dress up in your red, blue and white. Enjoy a bottle of wine, try out your French, and tune in to a wonderful day of virtual celebration.
