Local in the spotlight: Schoon

Local in the spotlight: Schoon

To help support local businesses, we will be featuring a local business each week in our series ‘Local in the spotlight’. This week we’re focusing on Schoon.

Schoon has become part of the Stellenbosch fabric. Renowned for its hand-baked bread and pastries, it is an ever popular spot to grab your fix. There’s also their frozen range, making fresh bread at home convenient and delicious.

Schoon’s commitment to using products from local farmers and artisans is admirable, and cements their belief in true community. Their business model rests on sustainable farming, hand-baking and slow-milled grains, which is captured in their slogan: Eat. With. Purpose.

Owner Fritz Schoon went to Knysna to learn the art of artisan baking and came back with a set of skills that sets Schoon apart.

Since its days at De Oude Bank Bakkerij, Schoon has now grown in various locations: one in sought-after Church Street in Stellenbosch, a quaint café in Bright Street, Somerset West, and also in Franschhoek on Huguenot Road. There’s also their Manufactory space in Stellenbosch, where you can enjoy a coffee while observing their impressive baking methods and skills.

We can’t wait for Schoon to re-open its tastefully decorated and warm atmospheric cafés, but in the meantime, we are not lost. There are various ways to get your hands on Schoon’s baked goods and support this Stellenbosch establishment:

  • Order via the Schoon App: Order a box of Schoon’s breads and pastries and some of their most loved, hand-picked ingredients. You can also order your choice of coffees and anything from their full menu.

  • Schoon has also created different ‘Boxes’, ranging from Bread, Pastries, Pizza and Burgers. The Breaking Bread Box is filled with a variety of different breads, accompanied by spreads, such as basil & avo pesto and an olive tapenade to round off the experience. Available on the app.

  • When you order a Market Box via UCookSA, you’ll get a selection of tasty local produce, ranging from vegetables, to cheese, and meat, together with a Schoon bread loaf.

We are looking forward to getting our hands on their delicious croissants, pasteis de nata and sourdough loaf! To stay up to date with Schoon’s offerings, follow them on Facebook @schoon.eating and on Instagram  @schoon.eating
