The corner of Church and Bird Street has seen many cafes throughout the years. There was Oude Bank Bakkerij (operated by Schoon de Companjie) and then came Boschendal Deli. Now a new face is occupying the space – Back’s.
The Back family is proud of their heritage. Named after the winemaker Charles Back, the talents of the Back-team doesn’t stop there, as their slogan says: “Butcher, Baker, Cheese & Wine maker.” (You might know the Backs from their farm, Fairview in Paarl.)
Back’s consists of a restaurant and deli, with a strong focus on sourcing ingredients locally. The deli offers fresh pastries, bread, jams, wines and meat cuts – to name just a few. Everything is also available to buy online.
If you want a sit-down meal, Back’s bistro-style menu does not disappoint. Breakfast is served until 11.15 and ranges from pastries, French Toast and a traditional English-style breakfast.
For lunch and dinner, sandwiches, salads, burgers and pizza are on offer. And for those who want to nibble on something while enjoying their wine, Back’s has numerous platters to choose from.
With tasteful decor, good service and delicious food, Back’s is certainly the latest place to visit in town.
