One of the best things about living in Stellenbosch and the Winelands, is the easy access to great coffee, and cosy cafes.
The 1st of October was International Coffee Day, and in honour of this, we celebrate some of the best cafes in Stellenbosch – both established and new.
Some established ones (there are many!):
Basic Bistro: A good solid cappuccino, with a scrumptious breakfast menu to boot. The atmosphere is homely and intimate, perfect for a coffee date.
Meraki: What an ode to design – the open, spacious cafe on a well-trodden student street. It’s vibey and has beautiful interiors. Visit uptown, or downtown in the sister cafe, Cafe Furlough in Dorpstreet.
The new kids on the block (always new ones popping up):
Missing Sock: A very creative name (and interior) in the heart of Stellenbosch. One part cafe, another part laundromat, Missing Sock wins with good coffee, great prices (only R20!) and the best seats in town – comfortable, soothing swings hanging from the roof. Definitely a winner with their hole-in-the-wall order option.
Legado: Situated next to Fidders, a shop dating from 1945, Legado is part roastery and part coffee shop. Impressive interior, great vibe, and good coffee – a perfect place to bring your laptop and get some work done.
Lastly, we can’t forget Häzz. Whether you sit down at their cafe in Van Ryneveldt street, buy yourself a cappuccino from McGiven at Die Boord Spar, or buy the beans to grind yourself – you can’t go wrong with Häzz.
We’re definitely spoilt for choice – and part of a lively, coffee culture.
